Music breathes inspiration, creates imagery and plays with my thoughts. It’s the spark that starts the fire. It feeds my soul.

People always ask me where do I get my ideas from. Well, music plays a huge role with anything that I create, whether it be a painting, a poem,  a journal entry, or one of my youtube videos. Sometimes, just listening to one song I can think up an entire plot for a web series, or it gives me space to reflect & sort out things that are troubling me.  It lets me escape my surroundings and find this haven of creativity.

I think it would be great to have a Monday Feels series dedicated solely to sharing music that inspires me. Hopefully, these songs will ignite something in you too! Please let me know your thoughts. Is this something you would love to see developed into a regular post series?

Here is Music Feels Post No. 1 (and maybe you all can help with a better series title? lol). This set includes songs that I spend a lot more time reflecting, brainstorming and writing to. You will find that they are beautifully written songs, mostly slow tempo, with enchanting instrumentals!

10. Birdy – Not About Angels

Its a simple song, but Birdy’s vocals takes you to another place.

9. Johnnyswim – Don’t Keep Heaven Busy

My heart! This song hits me there every time. The lyrics are an amazing description of a beautiful love. Dave and I love singing this one.

8. Devotchka – How It Ends

This song has been an all time favorite of mine! It has accompanied me many a time on my brooklyn rooftop journaling sessions. And has forever attached itself to some memories of my teenage years. Its a bit somber, but so beautiful.

7. Daughter – Youth

When ever I hear this song, I imagine being in a forest. Ha ha. I don’t know why.

Lyrically, there’s a lot of pain in this song. It captures the intensity of heartbreak. Which, at one point or another we have all been through. Pain is probably one of the most common places artist create work from. You might ask, how can something so sad inspire me? Creating something beautiful from something messy, painful or ugly has always painted this picture of humanity’s courage to face the harshness of life. That courage, that strength & creative transformation inspires me all the time. It’s hope.

6. Hillsong – Oceans

Talking about hope. This song encourages me all the time! Its about overcoming challenges and finding strength in God.

5. Kina Grannis – Fire

Kina Grannis is one of my favorite youtube music artist. I have been following her since she first started and have watched how her style has developed & grown as a songwriter. And her voice is perfection!

4. Amanda Cook – Wonder

“May we never lose our wonder. Wide eyed and mystified may we be just like a child staring at the beauty of our King.”

3. Cameron Orr – Looping Artist/Violinist

I stumbled upon Cameron Orr in a subway station recently. My husband and I fell in love with this very talented man’s work! He is a sight to see & a delight to hear live! He is also apart of the Emily Danger Band.

2. Bombay Bicycle Club – How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep

A whimsical indie electronic pop-ish song. I love all the band’s songs, but this one is definitely my favorite of theirs. And the claymation music video created for this song was brilliant.

1. Flammes a Lunette – Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart version

Talking about animation, we watched this movie recently and were in awe of the musical score. It’s not your typical pixar-esque movie.  It’s unique and strange. It’s a lovely story. One of my favorite parts of the movie has two of the main characters singing an english rendition of Dionysos’s Flammes a Lunettes.

“Do you like the rain?” “Getting wet, no. But the sound it makes, yes.”

Happy Musicpiration! Ha ha

Love,

Steph
